What benefits can we expect from a Wright Kerr Tyson Freight Health Check™?
In most cases a reduction of 10 to 30% in your export, import and world-wide cross-trade shipping costs. The health check will give you the information you need to maintain a much tighter control over shipping expenditure, it will tell you if you are receiving value for money from your existing service provider and your own responsible staff, and it will ultimately give you the confidence that your shipping activities will withstand the closest scrutiny from your auditors and shareholders.
Explain how the service works?
To carry out a Freight Health Check™, we need to see records of your export and import consignments. In particular: all invoices from your service provider(s) going back at least 3 months, preferably a year which cover the full range of your shipping activities; Sales ledger statements from your service provider covering the period under examination. This is to ensure that no invoices have been omitted from the health check, intentionally or otherwise, by your staff to evade scrutiny; any contracts or rate schedules agreed with the service provider. We will then check this information and contact you within 14 days to arrange a follow up meeting, at which we will discuss our findings and possible course of action.
How do you get paid?
We work on a No Win No Fee basis. Typically this is 25% of your first year's freight cost reduction payable quarterly during the first year after the savings have been made.
Are you associated with any freight forwarder, shipping line or logistics provider and do you take commissions or payments from any party other than your client?
Wright Kerr Tyson is completely independent and has no connection to any service provider(s). It would not be possible to undertake an impartial, objective review of a situation if our judgment was in any way biased towards certain parties.
What types of companies use your services?
Our client base consists of a broad range of larger corporate entities where the Directors are reliant on salaried staff to operate a cost efficient and effective shipping or logistics function. These are often global brand owning multinationals based outside the UK who are seeking assurances that the UK or European subsidiary is performing the shipping, distribution and logistics function cost effectively.
Which areas of international transport and logistics and what goods/products does the service cover?
We examine and check freight rates and services by any mode of transport to and from any point throughout the world. This includes distribution centre handling, processing and delivery charges for operations physically located in the UK or Europe. Our coverage extends to all manufactured products ranging in size from carton size shipments up to major engineering project cargo. We regret we cannot help with livestock, bloodstock, and perishables.
Why have you sent your details to me and not to my Shipping Manager*?
You are the Director who is ultimately responsible for effective cost control and the initiative to carry out a health check of the shipping costs will require your agreement. Our service is exclusively for Board members.
We have a very experienced and cost-conscious Shipping Manager*. What makes you think we should be checking his work and his probity?
Your Shipping Manager* or the responsible person within your organisation has many responsibilities, one of which will be shipping rates negotiation. This is an extremely time consuming and complex activity. It is unlikely that anyone else within the Company has the knowledge or experience to critically check such intricate dealings. In some cases this factor leaves the Company exposed to fraud that is very difficult to detect by normal accountancy practices.
Is the service confidential?
Absolutely. We report only to select senior management.
I am concerned that by introducing your service we will seem to be calling into question the ability and even credibility of our staff
Most board members and senior managers welcome the assistance we provide in helping to reduce their shipping budget and improve profitability. They are usually the first to admit that, due to so many other day to day demands, they are not able to devote as much time as they would like to monitoring shipping operation and rates. Our services will only be seen as a threat by the staff handling the day to day shipping where there is a real problem and the sooner that is brought to light the better. This is why it is essential that a discreet Freight Health Check™ be carried out without involving your staff. If necessary, we can examine the invoices and files out of hours, at weekends or in your private office to preserve confidentiality.
We send shipments to our distributors worldwide on a Delivered Duty Paid (DDP) basis. Our freight forwarders appear to do a great job and render just one invoice to us for all costs including foreign Customs duties after the shipment is delivered. Apart from driving down our freight and transport costs, why would we need Wright Kerr Tyson?
Unfortunately, some unscrupulous freight forwarders see the area of foreign Customs duties and taxes as a profit opportunity and may intentionally mis-declare your products to the Customs authorities in order to qualify for a lower rate of duty, while charging you the full, correct rate. This practice is illegal and major problems can result for your company and your brand in that market when the local authorities discover the fraud and decide to blacklist you and your products. Wright Kerr Tyson will put in place the necessary checks to ensure your freight forwarder and their foreign agent pay only the correct Customs duty rate so that you, your brand and your local distributor are protected from any wrongdoing by those whom the authorities see as acting under your instruction.
We’re involved in shipping projects and special rates apply. How can you help to further reduce our costs?
We have a great deal of experience in this field; in fact some of our most successful cases have been major projects, in brief we examine all aspects, from packing through to final delivery, to ensure you are getting the best overall deal.
How can we continue to benefit from the lower freight and logistics rates you introduce, should we go along with your recommendations?
The shipping industry is continually evolving so what was cost-effective a month ago may have already lost its competitive edge today. To stay in control of your costs regular monitoring is necessary. As we control your shipping function going forward we will monitor costs and efficiency on a weekly basis.
We put all of our shipping requirements out to tender on an annual basis. How can you help?
A Wright Kerr Tyson Freight Health Check™ provides you with the latest information about quality services available at the most competitive rates. This is particularly useful when you are reviewing tender invitation lists. We can, if required, organise and oversee the complete tendering process to ensure you receive the best possible service and rates available on the market.
Supposing I just wanted some general advice on shipping or logistics matters, or help with set up, staffing etc. Can you help?
Yes of course. Just give us a call and we will be pleased to give you any support you need, ranging from guidance on day to day problems as they arise right through to complete project management. We can even provide interim management and staffing to help you through those holidays and unexpected periods of staff absence.

*For expediency we have used the title ‘Shipping Manager’ to describe the employee responsible for the freight and logistics function within your organisation. In practice this function may be covered by an individual or department with varied titles, including procurement, purchasing and despatch to name but a few. That individual or department will be responsible for the negotiation and purchasing of freight, transport and logistics related services on behalf of your Company.
